In Motion: The African-American Migration Experience
Today's site from the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research
in Black Culture offers an exceptional presentation exploring the history of
those who were transported from Africa to America's shores. Gentle Subscribers
will discover an impressive resource encompassing a comprehensive examination
of the transatlantic slave trade and subsequent migrations.
"In Motion: The African-American Migration Experience presents more than 16,500
pages of texts, 8,300 illustrations, and more than 60 maps. ... The Web site is
organized around thirteen defining migrations that have formed and transformed
African America and the nation." - from the website
Although modest in its initial appearance and available in both Flash and
non-Flash versions, the presentation delivers an easy to navigate design with
an audio narrative and a list of specific migrations, among which include the
Transatlantic Slave Trade, The Domestic Slave Trade, and Runaway Journeys;
mousing over the headings reveals dates, contemporary illustrations and a brief
summary of content. Tabs at the top of the homepage lead to Geography, Source
and Educational Materials with images, texts and maps, and an always helpful
Timeline. An informative Introduction headlines the opening section, while a
useful Glossary for highlighted words in the text, as well as printer friendly
versions, are also available.
