Diseases of Wildlife in the United States
Today's site from the US Geological Survey offers information on the issue of
preserving the country's wildlife population in a healthy state. Gentle

aspects in the maintenance of healthy wildlife.
"Wildlife resources are under constant pressure caused by human population
growth, environmental degradation, and habitat reduction. Wildlife species are
also subject to diseases resulting from exposure to microbes, parasites,
toxins, and other biological and physical agents. These wildlife diseases are
often highly visible and result in large-scale mortality. Such losses are
incompatible with healthy, vigorous wildlife populations, making research into
and development of practical methods for wildlife disease diagnosis and
mitigation of wildlife losses a critical component of effective wildlife

This extensive site provides an overview of the work of the National Wildlife
Health Center, with Disease Information on more than a dozen conditions which
seriously affect wildlife, from White-Nose Syndrome to Avian Influenza. Under
the Research tab can be found a link to a particularly interesting section --
Coral Reef Ecosystem Health. Focusing on the condition of coral reefs, the
section includes background information, material on the surprising fact that
corals are animals, and diseases which attack corals because they are animals.
