        In Graphics: Muslim Veils

Today's site, from BBC News, presents illustrations of the various types of
head coverings and their proper names, commonly worn by Muslim women.
Gentle Subscribers will find clarifying examples of women's apparel which
is at the center of current controversial debate in the West.

"The word hijab comes from the Arabic for veil and is used to describe the
headscarves worn by Muslim women. ... These scarves, regarded by many
Muslims as a symbol of both religion and womanhood, come in a myriad of
styles and colours." - from the website

This simple site displays sketches of the three main types of apparel --
the hijab, the niqab and the burka --while the brief accompanying text
outlines pertinent details of each. Additional drawings provide information
on variations of these head coverings, including the al-amira and shayla
and regions where they are worn. A final illustration covers the khimar and
chador, both popular adaptations of the requisite apparel in a number of
countries.
