        High Speed Trains of Europe

Today's site offers an exhibit on the development and implementation of the
widely used high speed rail system available in western Europe. Gentle
Subscribers will find fascinating details of how they work and the amazing
speeds at which they typically achieve.

"[T]he European High Speed Trains Information Page ... In 1990, only 9% of
Americans used public transportation as a means to get to work, compared to
38.8% of Western Europeans. ... Autos are slowly becoming safer and better
for the environment, but they cannot compare to the extensive train system
of Europe. European trains are fast, efficient, and cheap for travelers." -
from the website

The site explores the history of high speed trains, with a particular focus
on France's "Train a Grande Vitesse" (grave accent omitted), familiarly
known as the TGV. With photos of these sleek-nosed trains and concise
details of the aerodynamics, coupling, braking and computerized signaling
systems, and power supply, the exhibit describes the comfort, convenience
and safety record of this form of transportation. A concluding section
takes a look at the Channel Tunnel, noting the three hour travel time
between London and Paris on the Eurostar high speed train.
