Convert -- Software of the Month
If Gentle Members are constantly or even occasionally in need of a handy
utility to deal with those pesky conversion chores, this month's Windows
platform freeware program may be just the ticket. Convert does one thing
and does it exceedingly well and is used in such out-the-way places as the
International Space Station.
The program, by Joshua F. Madison, is simplicity itself. Modest in size --
the executable is just over 500 kb, it loads almost instantaneously on even
a modest computer system and is restrained in its use of RAM, according to
MemLoad. The application provides conversion data for over 20 categories,
from Acceleration to Volume, to Temperature and Area, all within a single
tabbed window. Within one category like Distance, the choices include
centimeters, inches, feet, furlongs, kilometers, miles, light years,
meters, nautical miles, dekameters, micrometers, nanometers and parsecs
among others.
Under the Speed category, to take another instance, the options range from
centimeters per hour to miles per second. Simply input the number at the
bottom of the window -- 2, for example, after selecting an item such as
"mach", click on the output type, "miles per hour" and presto! -- the
results are given at the bottom of the window, in this instance -- 1482.91
miles per hour.
The List has found Convert to be an essential application, since it was
suggested by one of its Gentle Members, a professional engineer. Thanks to
