        Hogmanay Explained

If Gentle Members grew up in households where New Year's Day was referred
to as "Hogmanay" they may have no need of this entertaining site from the
city of Edinburgh in Scotland. With the New Year just a few days away,
however, perhaps a refresher on a holiday which more than rivals others for
Scots everywhere may be illuminating.

" Hogmanay is the Scottish New Year, celebrated on 31st December every
year. Never being slow to spot a good excuse for a party, the night
involves a celebratory drink or two, fireworks and the kissing of complete
strangers =96 not necessarily in that order. Where did the word Hogmanay
come from? Nobody knows for sure. Various suggestions have been made over
the years . . ." - from the website

The site offers explanations of the origin of the word "Hogmanay", the
facts on "First Footing", celebratory drink rituals, omens, the pursuit of
good luck, New Year resolutions and the lyrics of Robert Burns' "Auld Lang
Syne", complete with a glossary for some of the more perplexing phrases of
this classic.
