        Commercial Pilots Making Fewer Errors

Today's site, from the Why Files, offers an overview on aviation safety.
Gentle Subscribers, making plans for a winter getaway to somewhere without
snow, may find this article warmly comforting, if they could only get out
of the airport.

"[T]he dread may begin. Strapped into an aluminum tube within a few yards
of thousands of gallons of extremely flammable jet fuel, you're just
moments away from a journey through thin air, at the mercy of some pilot
who's locked into the cockpit. ... Flying a commercial airplane may scare
some people, but it's astonishingly safe." - from the website

This upbeat report presents the findings of a recent study from the Johns
Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Examining data from 1983 to
2002, the research breaks down the various categories of pilot error,
highlights the percentage change in each and notes the factors which may
account for this decline. Additional information discloses the increase in
preventable accidents caused by errors on the ground.

Cruise over to the site for a generally cheering report on the improvements
in pilot safety records at:
