Gallery: The Most Curious Canned Goods Found Online

Today's site, by Jenna Wortham from Wired magazine's "culture" section,
presents a collection of foods that are not exactly standard North American
fare. Gentle Subscribers, currently not having lunch, may be horribly
fascinated by this offbeat list of delectables.

"Mmm, mmm ... gross? In celebration of strange sustenance chowed 'round the
world, we've put together a list of freaky foodstuffs for the audacious,
fearless gluttons for gourmet punishment. ... Some of our contenders on the
list are international delicacies ... Others ... are capable of turning
the appetite of even the most adventurous diner. Most of the items listed
are available in specialty markets or can be unearthed for purchase online,
so happy hunting and bon appetit!" - from the website

The article has rounded up almost a dozen exotic edibles, all available
with the click of a mouse. Among this array are such notables as canned
silkworm pupae and reindeer puree. The jellied eels may have a more
widespread appeal, especially to those from the British Isles, where these
gastronomic treats are frequently on the menu, while those with a Scottish
background may feel that no Robbie Burns Day is complete without a serving
of haggis, but preferably fresh, not canned. Entertaining comments by
visitors from around the world enliven the article and place some of these
foodstuffs in a more palatable context, as well as adding some bizarre
contributions.
