Butterflies and Moths of North America
Today's site offers the remarkable project to incorporate all information on
North American butterflies and moths into an accessible database, which has
metamorphosed into a citizen science endeavor. Gentle Subscribers will discover
an exceptional source for an impressive range of material on the various
species within the Lepidoptera order.
"Collecting and sharing data about Lepidoptera ... Butterflies and Moths of
North America (BAMONA) is an ambitious effort to collect, store, and share
species information and occurrence data. You can participate by taking and
submitting photographs of butterflies, moths, and caterpillars." - from the
website
The homepage opens with a North American map dotted with indicators of
locations where a specific and verified species was found. Easiest to examine
is a recent submission from Newfoundland on east coast Canada since it is
relatively isolated. A click brings up a brief data window with essential
information and immediate access to more details, including sighting
information on the Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), a focused map, and the
submitted image, which can be enlarged. Expanding the map to separate
overlapping dots reveals other recent entries in the database, such the Common
Checkered-Skipper (Pyrgus communis) observed in Anderson County, Kansas with
accompanying stunning photos. The species Latin name links to an expanded
database entry with a wealth of content on the individual butterfly or moth,
while the project's Image Gallery contains more than 200 pages of photos, many
of them spectacularly dazzling.
