Hi Colleagues,
Clearly, there was a disconnect in the communication that came from
the President; the intended and the actual output.
The demand has been item adaptation, flexible progressive and diverse
methods of assessment or evaluation.
Not all candidates with disabilities are able to sit for exams as
presented by KNEC. Although there could be some modifications, the
concept being tested remains the same as already explained above.
There could be administrative modifications such as time/duration, for
instance staggering exam papers over two years etc.
This would only be based on assessed needs or limitations. For
instance, did you know that some learners will need to take breaks
from the exam room after every 1 hour?
I believe this is what the President meant; not watered-down exams as
might be the impression created.
I believe if this the intended meaning, then its welcome. Too bad
ordinary mortals like us don't get a chance to seek, in a discussion,
what the Head of State means by certain pronouncements.
However, we do have Martin Okiyo on the KNEC Board who I'm sure will
safeguard our dignity and could clear the air on such issues.

You raise a very important point. In fact the talk of special exams
will give the public the impression that we are not as competent as
the "able-bodied". While the deaf, for example, require the rephrasing
of questions in a way that eliminates unnecessary verbosity, they get
tested on exactly the same content.
As you know, John, you came out top, beating ninety-three (93) sighted
students in A Level exams at Thika High School in 1982 with no special
exams.
We therefore need to move with speed to correct this terrible
impression if we are to avoid sliding back to the charity/medical
model of conceptualizing disability. Colleagues, how do we move?

Have you thoght abouth this? Special exams for Persons with
disabilities? Although the president meant well, but is special exams
what all PWDS desire or deserve? While it is true that some Persons
With Disabilities may need and deserve those exams, many just deserve
modified exams and not special exams. I agree that we need the extra
time.
