Let me clarify what I said in my previous email: as I said earlier,
back in 1978 our teacher read an article to us about a medical doctor
with total visual disability. He achieved his goal way before the era
of abundant ICT gadgets. I still remember that his area of strength
was internal medicine which required excellent listening skills as the
patient described his/her symptoms. I think that is a good pointer to
one of the areas in which other doctors with visual disabilities could
excel. Psychiatry is yet another such area, although seeing is often
an advantage in that field, as facial expressions, gestures, etc. are
important. As for General Practitioner services (the kind one gets
when one has regular illnesses), there is no reason why this should be
unduly challenging. Of course I am not a medic, so my views should be
taken with "a pinch of salt".
In my own professional area, philosophy, teaching symbolic logic can
pose considerable challenge to a person with total visual disability,
so I have let colleagues handle it. However, I do teach "Introduction
to Logic", which still has Venn diagrams and a bit of symbolic logic.
I give this example to illustrate that it is often necessary to be
strategic in choosing an area of specialization in a profession.

You ask a very important question, to which my reply is: I would
hesitate to go through surgery with a blind doctor, because that is so
delicate that I would even hesitate to go through it with some sighted
doctors. I think such a doctor would himself/herself not be very wise
choosing to specialize in surgery, but again that may be my own myopic
view. However, I do not see why he or she cannot perform most other
medical procedures for me, such as simple diagnosis based on my own
communication of my problem and studying of lab reports following his
own lab requests. We certainly need to affirm each other's
professional competence by using each other's professional services;
for if we do not have confidence in our own, who will?

as blind students we face so many hurdles from school fees to lack

facilities and the biggest of them all; lack of support and
