Dear Stanley and colleagues
This indeed is an important subject.
Couple of things:
1. The subject should be framed as one of reasonable accommodation,
the point being that support should be tailored to each individual's
needs.
2. Can we all identify good practices which are already happening in
relation to our various employers? For example, how does the TSC deal
with the question of reasonable accommodation for teachers who are
blind? How about the Public Service?
3. In many instances blind folk are forced to make ad hoc arrangements
with their employers which are not set out in any policy. That means
we have to keep explaining and offering justifications all the time.
It also means there is no institutional memory. What therefore should
we do to remedy this?
4. Finally, I indeed have been looking for someone who I can get hired
both as an assistant (one who I can get along with, who can read, who
can drive, etc etc). I have still not got the right person. And they
say there's unemployment in Kenya!
