TALKS&ZOOMS Version 3.10

Release Notification

  1.. Introduction

We proudly announce the release of the Nuance Accessibility Suite -
Nuance TALKS and Nuance ZOOMS - Version 3.10 for Series 60 3rd Edition
for today, December 12th, 2006.

This release is addressing a broad range of new mobile handsets that
are running Symbian 9.1 Series 60 3rd Edition. It does not offer major
feature changes over version 3.0 for Series 60 2nd Edition (see below
for details of what has changed). The deliverables remain as they are,
with no changes compared to version 3.0; the manuals and audio CDs do
not change.

  b.. The new handsets

This section describes the newly supported handsets in a little more
detail, and gives examples of the (not necessarily TALKS-specific) new
features that come with them.

    a.. Overview

Nokia has released a broad range of handsets that utilize S60 3rd
Edition, with very different form factors, and different feature sets
addressing different target user groups.

  a.. The Nokia 3250 and all N-Series devices (N71, N73, N80, and N91)
are optimized for multimedia access. The 3250 and N91 come with
special audio player keys, and the N91 does even offer a 4GB or 8GB
hard drive. We do not officially support the Nokia N92 (targeting
mobile TV) and N93 (the camcorder-alike device), that require more
testing, especially for ZOOMS.

  b.. The Nokia E-Series handsets (E50-1, E50-2, E60, E61, and E70)
are the handsets targeting the enterprise or serious business user.
They are interesting for your customers as well, because they are
offered for a really competitive price. Most of them, except for the
E50, offer a SIP-compatible Internet telephony client. These devices
allow access to various push-e-mail services, including Blackberry
Connect. The E61 does even look similar to a Blackberry device; it
comes with a QWERTY keyboard. We do not yet support the U.S. version
of the E61, which is called the E62, due to audio playback issues;
this device will be supported soon with a patch release.

c.. The Nokia 5500 is an outdoor device, targeting the sportsmen.
TALKS does not yet support the special applications related to sports.

Please have a look at http://www.s60.com to find out more about these
devices and other upcoming Series 60 handsets.

The following sections will describe major features of Series 60 3rd
Edition devices, that now are accessible via the Nuance Accessibility
Suite.

    a.. Audio Playback

Though all S60 3rd Edition handsets support playback of Microsoft DRM
protected and unprotected content, the Nokia 3250 and N-Series devices
are optimized for audio playback, and they are delivered with a stereo
headset. The N91 comes with a 3.5mm jack, and thus allows using
standard headphones. For the other devices, Nokia offers adapters that
plug into the POP port of a handset, offering a 3.5mm jack for audio
output.

If you have purchased media protected by Microsoft DRM (WMA), you can
use the Windows Media Player Version 10 (or higher) to copy these
files to your handset, if allowed by the owner of the purchased
content. The easiest way to do that for a user with low vision is to
follow these steps:

a.. Select the file(s) to copy in Windows Explorer, then press the
Enter key to start Media Player;

  b.. Stop the playback with Ctrl-S;

c.. Connect your handset to the PC with its USB cable, select "Media
Player" from the mode selection menu on the phone;

d.. Tab to "Synchronize", and press Enter to open the associated
context menu;

e.. Choose to synchronize the current now-playing list with the
device, and wait until the job is done.

The easiest method to copy unprotected content, like MP3 files with or
without watermarks, is to connect the handset in data transfer mode,
which allows you to access its memory from the PC, just like an
additional USB drive.

Now you can use the Music application on the handset to play the
copied content. While the audio player implements most functions that
are desireable, it does not yet offer a full resume after issueing a
Stop function, and the playback is muted when skipping forward or
backward.

    a.. SIP-based Internet Telephony

Internet telephony using a SIP-compatible client becomes quite
poplar now. With the E60, E61, E70, and N80 Internet Edition, which
offer WLAN and a SIP client, you can take advantage of SIP telephony.

Not all SIP VoIP services will work with the SIP client that comes
with the Nokia Series 60 3rd Edition handsets. One service that
appears to work well, and that has published a good description how to
get SIP telephony to work on the E60 and E61, is Sipgate, available in
German and English:

    Germany: http://www.sipgate.de

    Austria: http://www.sipgate.at

    UK: http://www.sipgate.co.uk

Residents of other countries can use these services as well, but
may not be able to get local land-line phone numbers.

    b.. Podcasting

Nokia has released a Podcasting client especially for the N91, which
offers enough storage on its 4GB/8GB hard drive. You can download this
client from

http://www.nokia.com/podcasting

You can also find simple instructions on that web page, to help you
getting started.

You can expect quite large downloads when podcasting. Thus, you should
ensure that you use an internet connection with a flat fee and high
speed. The WLAN connection would be the best choice for the N91.

We have not tried to use the Podcasting client on other handsets.

  a.. What's New?

In addition to supporting additional handsets, version 3.10 introduces
some improvements to existing features, compared to previous versions
of TALKS. These will be made available also in a version running on
Series 60 2nd Edition soon.

a.. Settings changes now take effect immediately when confirmed with
"OK".

b.. Settings application now speaks on all phones (including 3rd
Edition), even when TALKS is unloaded - this used to work on older
phones, but not on newer models like the N70 and N90.

c.. Future versions of TALKS can now be installed without having to
disable the currently running version first, resulting in more speech
during the upgrade.

d.. Magnification: softkeys are focused correctly when switching
screen modes with [Talks],[*].

e.. Magnification: also tracks horizontal cursor movements in text.

f.. Fixed automatic reading of Caller ID when [Key 1] shows "Accept"
rather than "Options".

g.. Pressing [Talks] key no longer starts checking the screen for
updates (avoids situations where the screen is being re-read
unexpectedly).

h.. Disabled [Talks],[long 1] to open the (currently missing)
application-specific help page.

i.. Registration shows an error message if something goes wrong
while sending, rather than just waiting.

j.. Some general stability and performance enhancements.

  a.. FAQ

Q: Can I install the new TALKS&ZOOMS version to old S60 1st or 2nd
Edition handsets?
A: No, this is a completely different version that can not be
installed to older handsets.

Q: Your software does not install on my E-Series handset or branded
device! Why?
A: While TALKS&ZOOMS itself is certified, and thus can be installed on
any supported S60 3rd Edition handset, the installers for the TTS
engines (Eloquence or RealSpeak Mobile) are not signed. E-Series
handsets and some branded devices do only accept the installation of
signed software, unless you turn of the related option inside the
Application Manager:

  a.. Open the phone menu.

b.. Open the App. Manager inside the Tools folder

c.. Press "Options", then select "Settings".

d.. Set "Software Installation" from "Signed only" to "All".

e.. Press "Back" to close the Settings dialogue, then "Exit" to
close the App. Manager.

f.. Now, you can install the TTS engine.

Q: Which TTS engines are currently supported on the new handsets?

A: Currently, all Eloquence and RealSpeak Mobile voices that were
available in TALKS 3.0 are also supported in 3.1.

Q: Can I have speech on a call with the new handsets?

A: This is currently not supported with most TTS engines, due to some
changes Nokia made to the phone software that makes access to this
functionality more difficult now. We are working on an update that
will enable this feature also in 3rd Edition handsets. When using
Nokia's built-in TTS with TALKS (using the NokiaTTS driver), speech
during a call is already possible.
