I've never heard of "closed string" as a reference to vibrato. Can you
remember exactly what was said in this regard?

Hi All,
I need to create this faster roundish vibrato effect in a passage of a
string quartet. In Orchestration class, I learned that the solution to that
is instructing to play closed string. I went to the technique text options
but found only "open string". Where do you find closed string?
