I think I already commented heere but I think that would be great. I guess
it can be a verbosity option if you need.

Dan,

I think this would be good for harmony study, so it gets my vote.

Best wishes.

JP
not for me, but I can only speak for myself. Of course, audio feedback is
what I would prefer, being new to Sibelius, I don't know anything about how
it was in version 3. Was it something that was implemented for Jaws users,
or was it a function in Sibelius itself? Is it something that sighted users
don't need? I thought it would be good for everyone and that maybe, it could
be added to the Sibelius wish list. Cheers, JPR

  Re: vertical feedback.

There is actually a block of code in the beta 1 plug-in that deals with
vertical feedback but I didn't connect it because it was unfinished and we
needed to get something out in time for schools starting up.

I'd like to include this in Beta 2 but this will all depend on how quickly
I
can finish the components which need fixing. I'm becoming concerned that
users have been left holding bugs which should have been fixed by now,
especially the ones which cause the plug-in to fail and so releasing a
version just for bug fixes rather than new features has to be the
priority.
That said, if the vertical feedback isn't in beta 2 it will certainly be
in
  the release candidate.

To give you a brief overview of what the vertical feedback includes:

. speak all notes in all voices in the current staff.
. Speak all notes in all staves.
. Speak a summary of the harmony at the current location.

The first two are self-explanatory but the third is a little more
interesting. What it does is looks at all the notes in all staves and
then
reduces it to the minimum number of notes which can be used to achieve the
harmonic function. For example: if you have six staves which contain C4,
  F5, C5, F4, F3, and A2, the summary would be A2, C and F5.

You'll notice that the lowest note and highest notes were spoken with
octave
numbers but the C was not. This is because the message is supposed to
summarise the harmonic outline. In other words, the highest note and
lowest
note are spoken and all other notes are given only in general terms.

Unfortunately audio feedback, that is, sounding the pitches, is more
difficult. The playback features in Sib 5 are very different to those in
Sib 3. In fact, the entire interface is different and I'd prefer users
learn to manipulate what's already there (which is very powerful) rather
than try to fudge something which can be achieved with proper usage.

Regarding multiple voices in the same staff. Would it help to have all
notes in all voices spoken whilst arrowing through the staff? This would
have to be a verbosity option because some people won't want it. I'm
asking
because this would be easy to implement.

  Dear Dan,
do you have anything to say on this topic? I'm aware of the intense work
you
have to do, but please just say a quick word about the vertical feedback
function mentioned in more details below to tell me if this sort of thing
will be possible in future versions of sib access.

    Dear JP and All,
First, apologies if this is a duplicate message. I wrote a response
earlier and got interrupted. I don't think I ever sent it.

    Anyhow, JPR wrote:

another, or maybe writing several voices simultaneously

Yes, Sibelius Speaking 3.1 allowed one to press F2 to hear all notes in
all parts at any particular bar and beat. I have not yet tried Dan's
scripts for Sib. 5 and perhaps he has included that functionality.

Using Lime with our JAWS-based, Lime Aloud scripts, one can hear the
current note, all notes in the current part at any particular bar and beat
or all notes in all parts at any particular bar and beat. This facility
helps me when I am composing and many customers have told us the same
thing.

If Sibelius Access can not yet provide this feature, I recommend it for
consideration in a future version of Dan's fine work.
