Hello Ravi,

it is related with dc balancing of the transmission medium.
in high speed serial transmission(mostly fiber channel) the dc residuals of
the transmission line becomes a problem for clock recovery and bit run
length also becomes a limiting factor to control that the 8b/10b encoding is
used.

I am not a guru some others Gurus may flash more light on this

Regards,
Kedar

Subject: [SI-LIST] PHY PCS

Hi Gurus,

Have a very generic question about Physical Layer Device.

In the PCS i.e the Physical coding sublayer of the PHY Device why is the
8b/10b encoding/decoding required.

Why not the serial signals received by the MDI directly interfaced with the
MAC without encoding/decoding??

Apologies, if this is not related to Signal Integrity...

Thanks and Regards,

Ravi..
