I found that showing dogs was an addiction of sorts. If you have it bad enough, 
you listen and you read and look and you then evaluate your own dog against 
what wins, not who, but what, and against what the standard says, and against 
what you like. 

If winning is the goal, you have to buy/breed to what wins. If learning is the 
only goal, don't own, just go to shows and look and study.  I found asking what 
others like about other dogs was a  great educator.  But it often comes down to 
desire.

My mother's desire and addiction was much greater than mine, she put her money 
where her mouth was, after fighting it for years. She finally got what she 
wanted, winning dogs.  

Sara, and all the others who want to show their own dogs, you have to have 
exactly what a judge will put up, and said dog must be a real show man in their 
own right, to get the wins you seek.  If you dog does not look much like all 
this year's Selects or all the best of breed dogs at the all breeds, you need 
another dogs.

I have recovered from my addiction. It was hard, but I now do not seek to show 
dogs, just to go to dog shows.

But I completely get wanting to win and to do it without paying someone else to 
do the running for you.  But you need a top dog to win that way.

Study study study.  And when someone offers you a "better" dog, ask someone 
else what they think too,
