I liked your post, Kathy, but there was no mistake here: Ellen Heintz had inbred herself into a corner. It was DM that Obie had. Years before it was diagnosed as such, she called it "the problem" (because she didn't know what it was) and then one vet diagnosed it as spondylitis, which of course it was NOT. ALL of her dogs developed this and in 1985 or thereabouts, she stopped breeding because she was appalled at what had happened. Obie's symptoms were deadening of the tail, the appearance of much more rear angulation than he had previously had, first dragging toes in the back and then as the disease moved up his spinal cord, dragging his back legs, incontinence. Then it got to his front legs, dragging toes--he looked so humiliated when he was incontinent--he looked to me as if to say, "What's going on?" His mind was great; he just didn't understand. We put him to sleep at 10. Symptoms started 6 months before that, so at least I had him for 10 years.
