Again, referring to the standard, a long coat is only a "fault", not a "serious fault" or even a "very serious fault", but when's the last time you saw a long coated GSD win points. I expect it was a good twenty years ago when Dick Whalen put up a coated bitch for five points. She was one of the most spectacular movers I have seen, in addition to being substantial, good pigment, and lovely posed.
