The 'science' of where a website comes up in the rankings depends on
hundreds of things and the search engines aren't very forthcoming about what
they all are. Some say 170+ criteria for Google; some say over 200+. Some
of it resembles smoke and mirrors because it changes almost daily.
Bing/Yahoo trying to differentiate itself from Google (who has almost 70% of
the traffic) uses different criteria. There are other search engines but
they have a smaller amount of traffic, so we try to keep current with Google
and Bing/Yahoo for sure. We also don't have pay-per-click available as an
option because of the large cost associated with that. There are huge
marketing firms that do nothing but keep track of the changes in the search
engine algorithms and we learn from their research.
In the old days, you just had to repeat the same word over and over again
('German Shepherd') and it would come up higher. Today a website would get
'punished' (moved down in the rankings) for too much of the same word. It's
a combination of a whole lot of things including how long the domain name
(in this case www.GSDCA.org) is registered for, how many other websites link
into your site (although this one was just decreased by Google but increased
by Bing), how long the website has been there, when the last time the search
engine programs (bots) visited the site, how often the site content is
changed, the most-often used words in a website, the title of each page,
whether it has a site map, whether you register it with the search engine,
whether it has a physical location, where the location of the person
searching is, what the ranking of the websites connecting to you are, and a
myriad of other criteria that change on an almost daily basis. Many, many
people searching for a term does change it's rankings.
There are books written on this every year but the basic thing now and for
the last few years continues to be good content that attracts people because
they're interested in the topic - but doesn't try to be all things to all
people because that spreads the focus too much. It's a moving target. It's
called SEO and we pay a lot of attention to it and try to adjust to the
changes. We have had more focus on 'German Shepherd Puppy' than 'German
Shepherd Puppies' because Google's webmaster tools told us that the searches
using the singular are searched more than the searches using the plural for
that. We get monthly reports that tell us how visitors get to the website
and where they look when they're there. It measures visitors, unique
visitors, visitors by country, visitors by time of day, visitors by source
(AKC.org, search engines, direct typing of GSDCA.org), etc.
People expect more good content than ever and we're trying to provide that.
GSDCA.org gnerally ranks well (the web criteria now because of the explosive
growth of the Internet defines "well" as being on the first 2 or 3 pages of
the search engines) on almost all the search terms containing "German
Shepherd" but not all of them. If you find some, please send them along to

I imagine the full German Shepherd Dog would make it come up sooner,
too, but there are a LOT of people who would put Shepherd pups, or
German Shepherd Puppies in the engine without that important "Dog.?
