One more point on this subject of four show weekends.....( two shows in one day
for each Club ) that should be
considered for now.
We are losing Specialty Clubs annually.......this would be the boost they need
to stay solvent. If we help each other
as Clubs and help try to combine show weekends.....i.e. more help, better
entries and more efficiency and possibly
more people to help each other. It's a 'win win' for a friendly helful
partnership of clubs....and BIGGER SHOWS!
( Build them ..........and they will come ) <G>
The reason our German Shepherd Dog Club of Sacramento Valley, Inc. went to two
shows on Saturday was to try
to help save the GSDC of Reno, Inc.
Reno is in Nevada of course.....about 150 miles away. We now 'cluster' with
them in the Sacramento area. It makes
their show closer and more available to California Exhibitors saving that extra
SECOND trip... and the 150 extra miles.
It took me about a year or more to get our Club members on board with this move
and the very first year was tough
as we made some mistakes......and it IS a long drive for Reno to come into our
area.....but we have the one Park,
same ring set up, one clean up, both Premium Lists mailed together...one Show
Secretary for both Clubs and one
"big, hard, blown weekend" of pooling efforts to get FOUR shows done!!
As Exhibitor / Breeders......most of us are finding that very long drive and
the expenses of the drive, the Motels,
Restaurants, loading and unloading, preparing a dog and conditioning ........
the process of finding handlers for
TWO weekends, and paying expenses for handlers TWO weekends insted of one....it
just makes it "easier" in the
long broad picture of showing a dog to do it in one trip for the same judges,
shows, etc.
We have a nice male and we have had a couple of nice litters in the last two
years....but we literally have not been
showing much and all the points mentioned on these posts are the main reason.

We have a show up in our area....and 2 or 3 weeks later there is one in
Southern California ( 6 - 8 hr. trip )....and then
two or three weeks later another show in S. California. It is not worth the
trip when they are often not pulling majors
AND.... lets all be honest.....often in a two show weekend we only prefer one
judge for whatever reason. Since we
now figure they will barely be majors and will 'break' most of the
time..........it's just easier to just stay home and get
things done around the house. >:o(
Four shows on one weekend give the Exhibitor FOUR chances of a judge liking
their dog....and just one long trip
for the dog, the exhibitor and expenses for them ........and for their handler.
Seems simple to me. <G>........and I'm not even studying Freshman
Biology......<G>

  concept

Excellent post. I am also a supporter of multiple dog shows per day. I have
done this with UKC, ARBA and International shows. These venues may only have a
couple weekends available in any given region. So, they make the most of it.
Yes, they are long days. But every show amps up the handler and the dogs.
As a handler, it is time for that second wind :-)
The dogs have no problem with it.
Puppies don't need to be excluded. All they need is a good nap between shows
and they are good to go.

California is a HUGE state. Entry fees are up and travel, hotels and handler
expenses are not an option for many folks
who used to show every weekend.
I still don't understand why we don't have our specialties in conjunction
with AB shows. We could share the expense
of the venue, have great rings.
  Just some thoughts, Laura

I have been a supporter of 4 show weekends as a way to maintain entries here
on he West Coast. It DOES NOT solve the problem of encouraging new people into
the reed, however i believe the 4 show weekend benefits far outweigh its costs.
 \
MHO the order of consideration should be as follows:
  a. The Health of the Dogs: I agree with both Carolyn's these dogs should
asily be able to handle two shows per day for two days. Puppies can be excluded
and no one is forced to enter all four shows. I believe showing at the
National
s more physically assertive to adult dogs than showing twice in a day with 3
r 4 hours between each showing. Remember
hese are herding dogs and b. The Cost and Ease to the Exhibitor: The
Exhibitor is the "Customer". In this case the customer
is finding it increasingly expensive to show dogs, so a four show weekend is
a way to dramatically reduce the cost of
showing to the ustomer. In addition for example in California the specialty
show person would ave to only plan on 7 show weekends rather then 12 show
weekends. I would think his would make dog showing much easier for the
exhibitor.
  c. Club Members: I would think setting up and organizing for one weekend per
ear would be less work and less stressful then having to do the same thing
wice a year. I think it would also be easier to round up more volunteers for
ne show weekend then twice a year. And what happened to the cooperation
between
lubs that this could foster. "all for one, one for all".
  d. Handlers: IMHO any Handler that can't show two shows per day for two days
is
ot taking their craft seriously and not in shape. I believe all the handlers
i
now could easily handle this. I just turned 51 yrs old and i handled 12 dogs
er day on a 4 show weekend and trust me there are If 4 show weekends were the
orm, you can bet all the handlers would be in shape to handle this and if
they
ren't they will be replaced by younger fitter handlers. Just simply a
"survival
  f the fittest" situation.
As i am studying freshman biology with my 14 yr old daughter, let me apply
arwin's theory of Evolution to the German Shepherd Specialty ring.
ur sport will only survive and thrive based on our ability to ADAPT to our
nvironment. In these days of economic hardship, lower local club membership
and
n aging membership the 4 show weekend is a means to successful ADAPTION.
As an old and wise CEO told me a long time ago, you must at some time decide
if
t is "More important to be right than successful".
  My two cents.Bill

Some should read this post of Carolyn's again, word for word.
his breed is meant for working all day, not lying around in the air
  onditioning.

I've watched puppies around our property since "before dirt" and never
ceased
o be amazed at how they will, and
an, play all day long by 6 months of age. They may become mentally bored
oing in a ring twice in one day but
don't think they are so exhausted they cannot show or move around a ring a
few
  imes.
NWILLING and stubborn maybe..........<G>..........but not exhausted.
eard someone comment recently that two shows in one day is just too hard on
the
  ogs?
sn't this a Herding Breed.........bred to herd sheep and work all day long??

Maybe we should take a second look at a dog that cannot move around the ring
ith presence twice in one day?
  G>
idn't we once have shows with entries so big that lasted so long that Clubs
had
o hire two judges for one show,
nd the handlers had to 'switch off' to keep going?? When did this Breed
ecome so weak as to not handle going
round in a circle a few times twice in one day??
y thought is that if the dog cannot handle two small shows in one
ay........why not only enter one show. But as a
udge, wouldn't you want to know a dog couldn't gait in a circle a few times
in
  wo shows in one day?
URELY traveling the same distance on another weekend has to be hard on the
dogs
  oo....AND the drivers.
  G>
ome worry about Club members becoming tired putting on two shows in one day.

EP....it is tiring......but certainly no more tiring than another show
weekend
o have to drive to, load again , unload
gain, pick up judges, set up rings all over again, send out Premium Lists
and
ail again, Type up Entries again,
rint out Catalogs again, and clean up the show grounds again, AND find enough
illing and able Club workers to give
p yet another weekend and work again.....AND then, spend the rest of the Club
ear meeting and planning the second
how! . ( no wonder we can't get new members ) ( Not to mention
requirements' AKC has our Clubs fulfill now )
ll the time HOPING that we have Exhibitors willing to support our Show and
udges again enough to make that long
rive and expenses for themselves and their handler all over again. In
truth
ith entries what they are now we can
asily manage two shows on Saturday and two shows on Sunday and be done! It
  ives the Exhibitors and handlers
our Judge choices in one weekend and all in one trip.........and frees up
more
  eekends for everyone.
f more Specialty Clubs and or All Breeds would start planning on two shows in
ne day.....that would free up a lot
ore weekends for Clubs getting more available weekend dates for our
Futurities
  nd Shows without bumping heads
ith another Club and their show weekend. A little more
Organization......but
ore worthwhile entries for the work.

My first experience with the two shows in one day (outdoors) came last
weekend
  n Oklahoma. In the morning,
arolyn Herbel gave WD to the 6-9 puppy dog. When I judged at 2 PM for the
ulsa club, the puppy was exhausted
nd did not show well. So my conclusion is that two shows in the same day in
a
arm weather site can be hard on the animals.
am not worried about the handlers as they have the choice to show or not to
how. Now, my experience with two shows in one day inside in the air
onditioned atmosphere is totally different. The first show was an all breed
nd the specialty was after BIS. This gave the dogs a long time to adapt to
the
onditions and recover from the first show. I think there are good and bad
hings associated with the two show concept just as there are in all of our
ives. The clubs need to do what is best for survival. D.D.
