In 1991 a friend purchased a WGSD from a breeder in Winnipeg, MB to use as her
next SAR dog. Unfortunately in the vet visit prior to getting the pup, it was
discovered Too had sub-aortic stenosis, so Beth also purchased Too's brother,
Czar, in case Too's heart was too bad to withstand the riggers of SAR work.
When she got back to VA she took Too to several cardiac specialists in the
VA/DC area. They all agreed Too would not be able to withstand the stress of
SAR work. Beth's work called for her to go out of town often, so she'd bring
the two pups down to my house in Southern MD to babysit while she was gone.
Sometimes this would be for two or three weeks at a time. During this visits I
fell in love with Too, despite her bad heart she was a little scamp, could
always find a way to get into mischief and kept me laughing.

When Beth decided to place Too, who was then six months old, I begged,
sniveled, and pleaded to her to let me have the pup despite the fact that every
heart doctor in the Metro DC area said Too would never live to celebrate her
2nd birthday. This was a long time ago, but I believe her heart was rated at a
4.5 or 5.

Beth let me have Too when she was six months old. Too's breeder, Beth and I
agreed that I should allow Too, a high drive pup who had three speeds - FAST -
FASTER - FASTEST, to be herself, let her enjoy life and let God worry about how
long her life on earth would be.

I continued to take her to the cardilogist in Annapolis, and the prognosis
never changed. At that time nothing could be done. Finally I stopped taking
her to specialists since they weren't able to do anything about her condition.

Too lived to celebrate her 2nd birthday!!! In 1995, when she was 4-1/2 years
old we moved to Central Florida. Too raced around the 1-1/2 acre yard, keeping
the neighbors dogs barking, checking out what every one was doing, and enjoying
life. Sometimes she scared me, would keel over, her gums would turn white, but
she'd get thru the spells (I always took her to the vet for a check-up when
this happened).

Too lived to celebrate her 5th birthday - her 10th birthday and on Friday, June
13, 2003, when shhe was 12-1/2 years old, I took her to a local vet for her
Adequan injection. After the shot the vet and I were talking when suddenly
my dear little girl had a seizure and died.

A necropsy found all her internal with large blood clots hanging off them - I
always blamed Deramaxx for her death though I have no proof it was caused by
this medication.

FWIW Too outlived her entire litter!!! And Czar went on to distinguish himself
in his SAR speciality as one of the first 50 dogs certified in cadavar work in
the United States.

So sometimes when you take a chance on a little pup whose not expected to live
very long, you can be surprised ... nothing is written in concrete.

Heart Murmurs:

Having your puppies heart checked is always a good idea, especially if you are
thinking of keeping one of the pups or selling it as a breeding animal.

.... My recommendation to breeders is to have the vet check between 7-8
weeks-determine which if any pups have heart murmurs-hang on to any that do and
if murmur is still present at 12 weeks of age do an echo on the pup to see if
it has a congential heart defect causing the murm
ur like pulmonic stenosis or aortic stenosis. Then decide if you can find a
home willing to do the surgery for the dog or at least give it a loving home
for its shortened life span. Sometimes these dogs live to be 6-7 years of age,
but most die before 2 years.
