[ SHOWGSD-L ] help with Baytril

I had a bad experience with a bitch on Baytril. The stud dog's owner wanted
my bitch on it from the time she came into heat until she was bred. I did
so, and eventually had the bitch at Cornell with pyometria.
Their comment was that Baytril kills ALL bacteria, not just the bad stuff.
The vet said it was like shooting a sparrow with a shotgun.
It had killed all of my girl's good bacteria and left her wide open for
infection by any bacteria that entered.
We did end up giving my girl 2 shots a day plus antibiotics until the
infection had passed.
At least we kept her from being spayed. Now when she comes into heat she is
given cephalexin as a precaution to make sure that the progesterone surge
doesn't invite another infection.
Of course, she hasn't managed to have a litter yet, but she hasn't had pyo
again...
