Eating dirt is called Pica or Peca - not sure of spelling (of this or
anything else for that matter!).

The problem is not with the content of the dirt as much as the
texture. It can irritate the lining of the intestines, allowing
bacteria into the blood stream and can cause diarrhea for those
bacterial infections.

Had a girl, years ago who did it and constantly had the runs. Dr. told
us to put chain link fence pieces over her digs. It took a lot of
fencing but she finally had enough or gave up and all was well.
