Many years ago I decided German Shepherds' intestinal systems and eating habits were different from every other breed. I have had them: eat dirt, dig & eat dirt (I guess to get to China and eat Chinese), dig up and not only carry large rocks but chew on them like a bone, carry & eat firewood, eat any piece of grass or weed, and all of this in addition to a very good balanced diet. So far, none of them have had intestinal upsets or stomach problems. Now that I have Mom & Dad's schnauzer, I have added potting soil to the list. With my daughter's Dalmation, I have added moles. I finally decided that as long as none of them have a problem, it is OK. In the mean time ----forget about having a decent yard!
