Interesting reading about what the German's --specifically the Martins --did
with the backs.
I am afraid that this is not true as they did not begin this trend and
eventually began to turn this around.
This began under Dr. Rummel when Herman Martin was National Breed warden.
When Rummel died Herman took over and gradually this began to change.
Herman passed away and Peter Messler came in as President and instituted many
forward thinking ideas which became rules that still exist today and some we
have adopted as well but not as "rules"
Peter died and Reinhardt Meyer is now National Breed Warden-"President under
the old chain of command" with Henke as President but he does not control Breed
decisions, as far as I know. as he is a working judge.
Meyer also has instituted change, not on a personal basis but for the
betterment of Breed.
Enough rambling but I must add that Walter Martin was one of the most
knowledgable individuals about our Breed that I have ever known. He was a great
breeder of the German Shepherd.
The roach back has always been misunderstood by many and has been a source of
much discussion among the fancy.
Specifically the term is used to describe a roundness in the over- line (top-
line). The over line is composed of 3 areas of anatomy--whither 13-
vertebra--back -7 vertebra--and croup-5 vertebra. The back is ONLY the lumbar
vertebra.
The roundness is what is so distasteful to the masses and that is the top
line(over line)
A true roach back result from a flat whither and the hump that is the beginning
of the 7 back vertebra.
Much needs to be discussed concerning our great breed and how we can maintain
it's greatness in our country.
We must introduce new bloodlines to improve health and vigor as well as improve
those anatomical problems that exist here.
The 2 standards--the FCI and the AKC are very similar and it is only the
interpretation by the individual that is different.
Thanks,
Morton
