It wouldn't be that.  When dogs are being shown they are bathed  before and 
many times after every show (to remove grooming products), so you  could be 
looking at 3-4 x a week.  When I have a dog blowing coat that I  want to show, 
or 
a bitch who has been in season who has blown coat and I want  to rush it back 
in, I bathe them daily. Then they are soaked to the  skin before being blown 
up the day of the show, so it's something else in your  case.  Could be, if 
he's a house dog, constant temperate changes.  If  not, have his thyroid 
checked.
