[ SHOWGSD-L ] Toxic Gut

I have personally lost 2 GSD's from Toxic Gut. Since the day I quit feeding
any food with soy in it I have never had another occurence. You can tell me
this had nothing to do with it, but I am completely convinced it does and no
one will ever change my mind. I have never had one of my GSD's bloat or
torsion. The puppies I lost from Toxic Gut were a 10 month old female and a
6 month old male. Both dogs were glassy eyed, disoriented, weak, stumbling
and salivating when I found them. The female was rushed to the vet, where
she tried to get a vain to start an I.V. That was futile. The dog had no
blood
pressure. While the vet tried to insert the I.V. she had me "bag her" to try
and get some oxygen into her. She died within minutes. My vet did a
necropsy and felt that she had been poisoned because her intestines were
totally rotten. At some point I got on the internet and was told to have the
samples sent to a lab to check for Toxic Gut Syndrome. The lab confirmed
this. A year or two later the same thing happened again with the 6 month
old male. This time my regular vet was out and her equine associate was on
call. The male died within hours. Both dogs appeared fine just hours
earlier. I have been told that they cannot be saved with surgery or
treatment. Maybe that thought has changed since this happened several
years ago. It's a horrible death and something I don't ever want to repeat.
Again, I have not had this happen again since pulling my dogs off of food
containing soy and I have the same bloodlines.
