It is not so objective in judging that all honest judges with a full
understanding of the breed, will put up the same type of dogs. Even then
two judges
who select the same type, may often go with one or the other, and one might
go first and the other second. But, if you have a judge one day who will
favor type, and the next day one who will favor movement, you may loose a
number
of entries for both shows. It is too expensive today to travel to shows
where you only have a chance at points one day. Although there are a number
of
exhibitors who will only enter under one of two judges, or who will bring a
dog for each day, and not enter both shows.
It sounds great to say a good judge will always put up the best dog, but the
truth is that judges are human, the standard leaves a number of issues to be
determined, and there are some great honest judges who see things
differently.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Well said, Evan. There are many shows where you see a 4th place dog one day
go Winners the next. And other shows where the same dog is consistent in
winning. Whether you are showing in AB or Specialty, knowing what a Judge
likes
in a dog is the key. That only comes from experience and showing a lot under
as many Judges as you can. You can then learn their likes/dislikes. Another
variable is how a dog performs on a given day. My boy is a perfect example.
He can show beautifully one day and be a total jerk the next. Even if he has
everything else going for him, how can a judge reward a dog he/she can't
honestly evaluate. He doesn't deserve to win that day.

I totally agree that judges who can draw good entries on both days are a plus
to any club. Let the handlers/owners decide if their dog(s) will be what
that judge likes and enter what they will. I have dogs I won't show under
certain circumstances (indoor shows) or judges. I have another who, until
recently,
only did AB shows. I do both and I pick and choose the best I can.
Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong. That's the dog game.
