I remember fondly when we first had German shepherds in Michigan.  I  was 
so pleased when it started to snow, and how it covered up the poop and we  
didn't have to pick it up. The run in the back was about a quarter acre, and 
it  seemed such a boon to see a clean run each morning, covered by a layer of 
 snow.  the pine trees were coated with white each morning and the ice ran  
down the edge of the roof and at time all the way to the ground. Each 
morning we  were greated with the silence of a Winter's morn, and the sparkling 
snow  drifting over the yard.  There was a stream in the back and the sound  
of water gurgling through the brook just added to the wonderful Winter  
evenings.
 
That started in November, and went on through January. We never had to pick 
 up the runs, and the dogs loved to frolic in the snow and ice. It was 
beautiful  all Winter, and we never gave it a thought.
 
Those of you in the Northern climes know what comes next.
 
In late February when the thaws came, all those layers came together.   We 
couldn't see the ground, there was no place to walk, and at first we needed 
a  blow torch to loosen the New Earth. Then it was clear as the rains came, 
that  they were not going to wash away anything, but rather were going to 
make a new  mix of Mother Earth, that was never planned.  No more pooper 
scooper for  us. It was a large shovel and garbage pails.
 
And, a piece of advice.  Do not try to clean it up with a snow  blower.  
Enough said.
 
I am so glad to live in California.
