Actually, I recently attended a show with a foreign judge (already not  
familiar with our judging system) and was totally further confused by a ring  
steward who was not completely familiar with the GC system.  As a result,  
initially a CH bitch was placed BOS to the WB (who wound up BOB), The same CH  
bitch was the first bitch pulled & the judge told the handler the bitch was 
 her first select & grand champion, only to be told she couldn't do that (I 
 have no idea why since the CH bitch was in contention for BOB & was the  
first select, standing in line.).  Then the WD was placed BOS, but the  
steward again corrected the judge in that he could not be select since he was  
not a champion.  They had to recall all the male specials back to the ring  so 
the judge could pick a GC male.  The judge then put a CH male BOS, gave  
him the grand champion pts
and the judge went down the line & picked  another CH bitch for grand 
champion bitch, despite her original CH bitch was  still standing in place for 
the GC points.  Subsequently, the first bitch  got nothing but an award of 
merit ribbon. It was totally confusing, chaotic  & upsetting for the owners & 
handler of the first bitch (others also  heard the bitch declared the grand 
champion).  Unfortunately  the  steward had the judge mark her book and there 
was nothing to be done.  I  think it may take awhile before everyone gets 
all the wrinkles ironed out.
