This brings to mind what I observed yesterday as I sat waiting for my daughter at a major hospital here. A boy in an electric wheelchair and his parents came into the waiting room along with the boy's service dog. This dog was totally tuned in to the boy and walked along the chair close to the boy. As they waited, the father put the boy's hand on the dog so he could feel and pat him. When the boy was taken into another room for tests the dog tried really hard to follow. He did not bark or whine but just pulled and wanted to follow. It took some persuading that he could not go there and was gently restrained. (blood was drawn in that other room and because of possible contamination, no animal was allowed there). We learned that the dog came from Atlanta and really belonged to the service organization there but was placed with this family. Of course, he was trained for his job and the people had to agree to take excellent care of the dog. The home was inspected periodically and vet records examined, the dog's weight etc. These 'owners' were clearly responsible and the dog was well schooled. If only more people would take such care. We do it for service dogs etc., and they are good citizens. If only the general population would take such care, there would be fewer problems with pets.
