Even regardless if it is legal or not- if the change was made on the 20th,
entries weren't closed could be said... And the information wasn't passed
along until 21:30 on 9/21. Late- for those in the eastern time zone (10:30
at night), and late- for those in my time zone... But perhaps still "legal"
that entries didn't close til midnight. Lots of time to think about
cancelling. (As if that would happen with how much money is already spent
out for accommodations, vacation time taken, banquet dinner tickets, etc)
besides the legal... It's not RIGHT to do it!!! It's not right to be the
most expensive entry all year for an agility trial, and then to give flat
ribbons- two layered or not!!!
It's not right to send the information late at night (perhaps the secretary
didn't get it until tonight either for what we know) on the night the shows
close. Though the site says "updated 9/19" I know it wasn't there after
midnight on Tuesday night... I was looking! And, then, it's not even in
the right place on the website!
I find it just a shameful thing to do something so unethical to the agility
competitors. The great majority of people who show in agility do NOT show
in confirmation, but come to the nationals just for the agility trials! It
is just an embarrassment on the club to change the premium at the last
minute when everyone has already made all their travel plans and the checks
are cashed.... All that expense atop the entry fee to go home, at best,
with a flat ribbon. A great many agility clubs/trials hand out rosettes-
for placements, for the 2Q, for new titles. I wonder if the GSDCA is
prepared for someone to earn their MACH/PACH at the trials? I know there
are people who save those last legs just for titling at the national
trial! Or, those who save that last excellent leg for at nationals to
complete their PAM! (Like the young lady I am bringing to the trials is
going for) or myself- already going for lure coursing, and traditional
obedience this year, so I'm starting my very first agility dog that I
started training with a few weeks ago just so I could enter the agility
trials-- for the first time for me too -- and now not even agility
"newbies" get the encouragement of earning a rosette with a placement! ALL
the trials I have accompanied my protégée to at least offer rosettes for
Novice, especially the A class, even when the higher classes get flat
ribbons! And the higher class people love that the novice people get those
rosettes! It's encouragement to keep going! I hadn't planned on starting
my dog until the winter, but hurried up & have trained every single day
just to get ready for the national agility trial and at best, we will be
rewarded for our hard work and my expense with a flat ribbon. :(
I am just twisted out of shape upset, not only for myself, but especially
for the people who are truly just starting "in dogs" and make the effort to
show-- what encouragement the GSDCA is giving the exhibitor. Perhaps
that's part of why there's a problem with declining entries, membership,
participation, the club's money problems. I just can't understand how
whoever made that decision. Whoever you are, shame on you! And I'll say it
right to your face too if I knew who you were!
I am entered in 3 venues with 8 entries for ONE dog at this year's national
trials. My protégée is entered in 2 venues for 9 entries with ONE dog at
the national trials.
At $20-35 per entry (coursing entries are $20, the rest $35), that's some
good money just for 2 dogs! You can bet we will be spending all of that
somewhere else next time where we don't drive 8 hours each way and have the
expense of travel, accommodations, etc on top of the entries. I am this

now, embarrassed to represent this club, even just as a member. I always
held such hope that all would work itself out, but this is the slap in the
face that broke me.

Is the GSDCA trying so hard to save money they're chintzing the agility

the general fund to boot, AND when the GSDCA agility trials are the most
expensive of the year! People were willing to PAY for the opportunity at a
rosette in class placement, and now all one gets is a ribbon, when one can
get a ribbon (and sometimes a rosette) for an entry that costs half as
much?
I am embarrassed. I am carting a young lady across the countryside for an
overpriced agility trial for her to get the chance at a ribbon after
telling her, "it's the nationals- see here in the premium? Placers get
rosettes and so do qualifiers." Now even DOUBLE QUALIFIERS (that's entered
and qualifying in BOTH the standard AND jumpers classes the same trial same
day for those of y'all not in the know) get a "double ribbon". Really?!?
Won't a first-timer at the nationals coming just for agility be thrilled
to have burned up her precious college budget for flat ribbons when she
could have shown for 2 weekends at the price instead of 2 days, not to
mention missing school and the travel !
How in the world did an event with a surplus prize budget get the prizes
cut? Hmmph. Perhaps it was no coincidence there was a constant contact
begging for more sieger show trophies- 70 of them- that the agility prizes
got cut. Perhaps not. That's for all of you to decide.
