In a letter addressed recently to the President that has been making the
rounds of the lists, Senator Santorum mentioned that he had bred his
German Shepherd 'Schatzie' This is a quote from his letter:
"My family and I purchased our beloved German Shepherd dog Schatzie from
a small breeder. We and Schatzie raised a litter of puppies in our own
home last year, and fully understand the hard work and commitment that it
requires. I also know that most commercial breeders are dedicated to
their profession and to their animals."
So you can imagine my surprise when I read this:
"In Chester Springs today ( July 6, 2005) Senator Santorum was joined by
U.S. Representative Jim Gerlach (R-PA-6); Dennis Sprung, President and
CEO of the American Kennel Club (AKC); members of local kennel clubs, and
dog breeders to discuss the Pet Animal Welfare Statute (PAWS). Senator
Santorum introduced the legislation in the Senate to address the lack of
regulatory oversight that has allowed some in the pet industry to operate
below the acceptable care standards for pets. Senator Richard Durbin
(D-IL) is an original cosponsor of the legislation and Representative
Gerlach has introduced companion legislation in the House of
Representatives."
Quoted directly from his address:
"I want to thank the Representative Gerlach, the American Kennel Club,
and dog breeders for joining me today to express support for the PAWS
legislation," said Senator Santorum. "As the proud owner of a
*two-year-old German Shepard named Schatzie*, it is disturbing to see the
number of breeders who are careless in their responsibilities of breeding
dogs in a healthy and humane environment. Breeding and raising dogs
without respect to the animal's welfare guarantees bad results for the
unknowing owner, and for the health of the dog and her puppies." (The **s

So, as I see it, Senator Santorum bred his GSD 'Schatzie' when she was
but *one year* of age!!
Is this responsible breeding, Senator? Were her hips x-rayed and passed?
Was she temperament tested? What evaluations were done to ensure that
she was of quality to breed? What thought did you put into choosing the
sire for this young bitch's litter? Who guided/mentored you on this
marvellous breeding experience? Where are the puppies now? Have you
ensured that they were all placed with people who would spay and neuter
them? It is 'healthy and humane' to breed a bitch that would still be
regarded as a puppy by responsible breeders?
THIS is the man who is calling for enforced federal regulation of small,
dedicated and responsible hobby/show/performance oriented breeders? THIS
is the man who is sponsoring the legislation that the AKC endorses? No
responsible breeder of German Shepherd Dogs, let alone most other breeds,
would sanction the breeding of a one year old bitch! In my opinion, he
has just proven himself to be as utterly ignorant of the art and science
of breeding purebred dogs as any two-bit backyard breeder who floods the
market with dogs riddled with genetic imperfections.
