Harley is, first and foremost, just a pet; a great house dog and companion. I
would never have campaigned him if he wasn't. His grandmother, Ch. Diana, was,
first and foremost, just a pet. Everything beyond being a pet can be icing on
the cake, if that is where one's interest, and/or ego, lies.
I know a few lovely, winning champions who are as spooky as they come and MUST
live in kennels and crates, reproduce, and be drugged for the show ring.
Wouldn't give a plug nickel for any of them, or their progeny. Can anyone
truly mourn the loss of these pitiful non-pets? Can anyone truly revel in the
records and wins of these quivering cowards? Can any judge truly be proud of
awarding a drugged animal any win?
DM sucks and anyone knowingly breeding homozygous and heterozygous animals
(today, in the age of OFA DM DNA testing) without DNA testing and culling
should be ashamed of themselves. This disease could disappear in two
generations, with no loss to breed quality, if all breeders would take their
responsibility to the breed and to the public, seriously.
Sincere condolences, Sharon, for your loss. This pain is the true price we pay
for sharing life with these fantastic animals. You had MUCH to be proud of in
Charlie, ESPECIALLY that he was your PET! Take care.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your wonderful best friend. Life with our GSD's
would be nothing if they were not great "just a pets".....that's for sure!!
It sure never gets easy over the years to lose one .........no matter how many
times
we go through it.
But, wasn't this dog sired by BONO............and not Color Guard??

I had to say farewell to my Charlie due to DM. This was my first experience
with DM -
what a horrible disease. After much success as a puppy (winning numerous
Best Puppy awards, except when his sister,
Chickie Baby was entered, when he would take BOP!!), he did not grow into his
promise
as a show dog.
As he matured, I heard more than one "Oh, he's just a pet..." comments in a
dismissive,
derogatory voice aimed in his direction. Well, this "just pet" was my
constant companion,
a balm to my soul on many occasions, and never failed to give more love than
he got - and
that was almost infinite.
Okay, I made him into a "mama's boy", but we both cherished that
relationship.
Everyone who met Charlie was captured by his sweetness and gentleness, and
when he
let me know it was time to let him go, the vet's office was filled with
people who wanted to
say good-bye. His dam, Cokie, and her sister, Ludy, (now almost 12) have
outlived Charlie
and I am so glad to still have them, along with two of Cokie's other progeny
by different sires,
but there is a huge hole in my heart where Charlie was - the tears just won't
stop. Good-bye my
sweet, kind, loving pet.
