First, let me apologize to any and all Veterinarians on this list who know how
to properly position a dog when shooting x-ray films of the hips. The
following "vent" is not aimed at you guys.

I'd estimate that approximately 80-90% of the digital x-ray films Kim and I
receive from pet owners, claiming that their Vet diagnosed their dog with hip
dysplasia, the films were shot with the dog incorrectly positioned. Also, in
about 90% of these cases, the films are never submitted to the OFA for
evaluation.

When we take our dogs in for their x-rays, we take them to experienced Breeder
Vets. Consequently, we have never encountered a problem with incorrect
positioning. I fear that, all too often, pet owners take their dogs to Vets
who just don't understand proper positioning. This is extremely frustrating,
not just for us as breeders, but for the pet owner as well.

We do suggest the pet owner take their dog(s) to Vets who we know are
experienced in shooting hip/elbow x-rays for evaluation, but most pet owners
aren't willing, or can't, drive 2 or more hours to take their animals to an
experienced Vet. They prefer that their local Vet shoot the films. This
*should* be a viable option for the pet owner and, for that matter, the breeder.

When shooting films for the evaluation of hips, why do so many Veterinarians
not understand how to properly position a dog? After all, there are many
articles available, with illustrations, explaining how to position a dog for
shooting hip x-rays.

Here's a link to one such article on "The Importance of Good Positioning on
Canine Hip X-rays." From the author, "The purpose of this article is to teach
the average dog owner how to determine if a hip x-ray is done properly on their
dog's hips."

rather opinionated (<G>), but please try to read this article with an objective
mindset.)

Well, enough of my morning rant. I hope you guys have a wonderful day.
