This is not necessarily true. A sable dog, like all other colors, carries
2 color genes. He may be a sable/sable but he could also be sable/b&t, or
sable/black. The thing about sable is it is the most dominant of our color
genes, so if a dog HAS the sable gene, he will BE a sable. But he can still
carry another color gene -- say b&t. Each parent contributes ONE of their
two color genes to the offspring, and the dominant of those two genes given
to each pup will determine the color expressed in the pup. So in the case
of the sable with a b&t recessive, he could contribute a b&t gene rather
than sable and if the sable bitch also has a b&t or black gene which she
contributes to the pup, then those puppies will be b&t.
The only way you could be SURE of getting all sables when breeding sable
to sable is if one of the parents is a "double sable" meaning he or she has
ONLY sable genes. Most people would prefer not to have a double sable
because then any time you breed that animal, all you can get is sable,
regardless of the color of the other parent.
