I was thinking it would balance out as well, but with the older dog,
recessive for coat, it sure didn't.

Now Vinnie, recessive for coat & black, who knows? He's young.

I'll send you the blacks <VBG>. Very nice black bitch in the last litter,
hope they show her :)

You can never judge the numbers unless you do a LOT of breeding
with the same dogs. I'm told it balances out...but I never
breed enoug.... or push it to find out. <G>
Again...in the case of your dogs mentioned...both the coat and
the black factor would be so easy to breed out if you wanted to.
<G>
Given a choice...if we are interested in two studs...I will almost
always opt for the one that does not carry the coat factor if one
of the two does not. We have never bought into the thinking that
"you have to breed to a coat occasionally to get a nice plush coat."
Most of our dogs do not carry the coat factor, and some of our
plushest coats have not. Blacks are fine with us obviously.

It has never seemed to me (thankfully) that I would get the 25% I would
expect from breeding a dog who is either recessive for coat or recessive
for

black to another who is recessive for the same.

Case in point, my CH Vinnie is recessive for both, yet when bred to a
bitch
who is recessive for black and/or long coat we have few of either. Last
litter was a perfect example, 9 puppies, 1 black, 1 coat. It was a
repeat.

1 black last time.
His first litter, he was bred to a black so you would expect 50% blacks.

1 out of 7 puppies was a black.
I had a male a while back, recessive for long coat, had huge litters,
maybe
1 coat in a litter, maybe not. He was the product of 2 dogs who were also
recessive and 1 out of 12 was a coat.
Now, mind you, not complaining...just thinking out loud the numbers
haven't
been going the way they ought for simple recessives.

I don't prefer a black or a coat. I did DNA testing on the last litter
and held back a gal who is recessive for neither (and DM clear).

It's a recessive....like long coats. Easy to breed IN
and easy to breed OUT.
