If you want longevity you could cross breed with a horse or a parrot.
They live a long time, and might result in 30 year old German shepherds. The
horse might not mind, but you would have a very angry parrot.
I understood the potato thing was due to the hatred of the French, and the
change from French Fries to American Fries. I may have some bad
information there.
In fact, we are doing a great job with the German shepherd breed. There
will always be problems, and we can resolve them within our own breeding
programs. As Ed says, out- crossing to another breed is not going to give us
more of what we want, but less of what we have.
And, Ed, I was told by Dan Quale that there is no "e" on potato.

Now if your number one goal in breeding is health then increasing your
gene pool is a wonderful thing ( not a cure all but the numbers are in your
favor) ... yeah I know we want it all, great winning conformation, strong
working drive and healthy diverse bloodlines....can we do it? I don't know...
but I do know that back in the middle 1800s the Irish went threw a famine
due to one or two types of potatoes being wiped out due to a lack of genetic
variation/ diversity... forgot the name of the disease that hit them but
that , and other political issues caused many deaths! I know it's perhaps
too strong of an analogy, but I think my point is valid! Kind of like the Raw
diet thing! Two more hours my pork butt goes on the smoker and my butt
gets into the bed! I'm sleepy.
