I am trying to "catch up" on the list mail as well as the other emails I receive. So if my post is redundant I apologize. So many things have changed regarding specailty clubs and all breed clubs, at least in the area that I live, which is Northern California. Foremost is the point system isn't anywhere near what it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. We no longer see regional specailty shows that require 2 judges. This was common in the 60's and 70's. Some clubs automatically chose two judges. There was no need to wait to see if the entry requied two, it was just an understood fact. Some of the more prominent Kennel clubs also had two judges. Santa Barbara KC was a benched show and if often drew 4-5 points. I was and still am a member of Diablo Valley GSDC. Our club worked with Del Valle Dog Club of Livermore when Del Valle was a new club. My husband and I were active in Del Valle as well, we were there from the beginnnings, matches first show etc. I was able to co-ordinate judging assignments with the show chairman of Del Valle. We always drew majors, had a large ring etc. Del Valle has grown to one of the mjaor All Breeds in the US. They seldom get a large GSD entry now becuase of date change and they cater to many other specialty clubs, many have 3 -4 days of majors. Several of our judges on this list have judged at Del Valle Dog Club in Livermore, Ca. The other specailty clubs did not like our breed's double handling and there were often complaints. All breed clubs that will support a specailty entry of any breed, need the grounds, parking, ring size etc. etc., to get the big entires. Some can and will do it, other's can't or won't. Things began to change when all breed clubs as well as specailty clubs wanted to hold their own back to back shows. This brought more shows to the exhibators, and they made choices. Most exhibators during this transition didn't have to wait several weeks for their next dog show fix. There were always shows available. I remember having our own open bitch in the ring, at an all breed shows with a specailty judge, with 30 or 40 others. I remember a puppy's or a novice dog at an all breed in a class of 15 -20, or more. Of course the point system was different then, based on the entry compared to today. But it was common to have larger entries. In my opinion, I don't see that we will go back to that. I also don't think many people would want to. While it may be nice to say, you won a Novice dog class of XX number, if they garner the 15 points including 2 majors under the correct number of judges they still add CHAMPION in front of their name. Speaking personally of the champions we bred and owned, only one won all of his point in the all breed ring. He was red and black, good temperament etc. He was just adequate moving, but clean coming and going, full mouth, correct bite, handsome standing, etc. Another one won all of her points at specailty's, finished quicly at a young age. She was in my opinion our best mover, but could have been cleaner going away. Bottom line the majority won in both rings, under a knowledgeable judge in a decent ring.
