Hi,
I would never let a puppy go to a new home without a vet check. I do the
vaccines myself. When I first started out breeding, I had a high school
student who wanted a puppy. His parents took him to several breeders to make
an "educated" choice of which breeder to purchase the puppy from. This is
BEFORE I learned to take pups to the vet for a check up, so maybe 20 or
more years ago. He decided to purchase a puppy from us. He came and picked
out his puppy and was sooo happy. Then a few days later, his father called
and after they took the puppy to the vet, they found he had a heart
murmur. The family was devastated. They brought the puppy back, I offered
them
another one or their money back, but the kid was too heart broken to have
another puppy. I did keep the puppy until he was old enough to be taken to
a specialist and he had a problem that could not be fixed. He did have to
be put to sleep. The family did come back after they had grieved for their
puppy and did purchase another puppy from me with my next litter, but
never again would I let another family go thru that kind of heart ache with
out
a vet check.
As for picking up diseases, it a vet comes to your home, you would have to
have him bleach his shoes, etc before he walks in your home, so he could
just as easily bring parvo, etc to your litter. I bring my puppies to the
vet and yes, it is a pain, but they NEVER touch the floor at the vets. They
are weighed on a portable scale that is disinfected before they are put on
it. Puppies are brought in one by one, we have a production line, but it
works and is safe and my vet knows that I won't allow them to touch the
floor at his office. After the visit, I then bleach my shoes before I get in
the van. Paranoid, yes!
I had to argue with one vet tech for an older puppy once that wanted me to
put him on the scale for big dogs, I said NO WAY. She said he had to be
weighed and they put dogs with Parvo in another room so the scale wouldn't
have Parvo on it. I told her she must be a mind reader then as sometimes
you bring in a dog/puppy that does not have the symptoms of Parvo, but a few
days later is sick. I made her get a bleach mop and use it on the scale
before I put my puppy down. The whole waiting room heard us arguing. This
was not my regular's vet's office. She was not happy!

charges me $50.00 office visit and $7.00/pup for exam. This works well for
me as the pups are examined by my vet within a couple days of going to
their new home and the new owner and their vet know this pup is healthy when
they take them.
