With all the talk and advice to Sara, it made me wonder how many of you "got into" shepherds. I met Ellen Heintz in the 1970s--we were in The Western new York Schutzhund Association and I liked the way her black dogs looked and acted. She was my mentor for a long time, then became my best friend. In my life, I have rarely met a person with the knowledge that woman possessed! I loved her. When I began showing, her husband Gene handled for me. (In a previous post, I admitted to always having 2 left feet for the breed ring.) <G> Gene was NOT a professional handler, but he put points on my solid black male Landsend's Obie of Jeenellyn, CD, OFA. I owe Ellen everything. She saw something in a rank beginner (ME) and answered every question and recommended books, sponsored me for the GSDCA, so many things. Gosh I miss her! How about the rest of you? Did you have mentors? Or did you go it alone?
