AKC Involvement in the
Working Dog Sport
At their August 2009 meeting, the AKC Board directed the
Performance Events Department to continue to research the feasibility of
the
Departmentâ??s recommendation to â??endorseâ?? existing organizations that
currently
administer schutzhund events.
Why Would the AKC Endorse Another Organization?
_ AKC acknowledges that the sport of schutzhund is
important to the proper testing of the working characteristics for the
breeds
that were primarily developed as guardian dogs.
_ AKC registered dogs should be provided an opportunity
and encouraged to participate in the sport if their owners desire.
_ AKC understands there are other organizations that are
fulfilling the need to provide Schutzhund events as well as the other
testing
that together provide valuable feedback to breeders of these working
breeds.
_ AKCâ??s direct involvement would largely duplicate the
efforts of other organizations. These organizations would likely view AKC
as a
competitor. This situation is inherently antagonistic and is arguably not
in
the best interest of the sport.
_ Therefore, AKC is exploring the feasibility of
endorsing organizations that are currently providing training and testing
for
working breeds according to international standards. AKC8
0s endorsement is its
acknowledgment that the organization is holding events and recording
results in
a fair and consistent manner according to their rules.
What Is the Benefit for an AKC Dog Owner?
AKC dog owners have expressed a desire to have the
accomplishments of their working dogs acknowledged by the AKC. Similar to
other
performance events, these owners would like to receive an AKC title ce
rtificate
and have the title placed on their AKC pedigrees.
Under the endorsement idea, AKC would acknowledge titles
awarded in events held by the endorsed organizations. If the owner of an
AKC
registered dog requests, the AKC would issue a title certificate as well as
place the title on an AKC pedigree. AKC must receive verification of the
accomplishment
from the endorsed organization and the owner would be required to pay a
fee to the
AKC for each title recorded.
How Does AKC Determine Which Organizations It Would
Endorse?
_ Each major Parent Club would be asked to select one
working dog organization which they would like AKC to endorse. Their breed
would
be encouraged to participate in this organizationâ??s working dog events.
However, a breed would not be limited in its participation to only the
organization
selected by its parent club. A dog may participate in any endorsed working
dog organization
event.
_ The organization selected by the Parent Club must meet
AKCâ??s endorsement criteria.
_ T
he organization selected by the Parent Club must
willingly accept AKCâ??s endorsement.
_ AKC will work with the administrating organizations to
determine the titles AKC would acknowledge and how verification would take
place.
Whatâ??s Next?
The AKC Board has not made a decision regarding the future
of the Working Dog Sport. The Board has requested that the Performance
Events
Department discuss the endorsement idea with the major working breed Parent
Clubs and the organizations which they recommend for endorsement. Once this
input has been obtained, the Board will discuss the matter further.
