There seem to be a number of John De Hope stories. For some reason they are helping me cope with the loss of yet another of the great shepherd people, so I am going to tell my own. A while back, late at night, I think it was 10:00 or so, so it was after midnight for John, I got a call from him. It was the last great argument I had with him, and we started by just talking about the limits to the Selects and what the board should do. John was all for it being limited to ten, and I was against it. John told me it was now too easy to go Select. He felt that when 1/3 of the animals or better went Select, it meant that it was too easy. I told him that the quality was so high now, that in the old days when there were 80 or 90 entered, many were not in competition but were in the ring for the owners to see, and therefore, it is harder now than ever. Also, I told him that those who entered either did go Select and were pleased with the numbers, or those who didn't make the cut, think there should be more Selects not less. Then John told me that it was too easy now to get an ROM. He said that it could be done by one litter, and that the club should make it harder, and make it be from at least two stud dogs for the bitches and for males, a higher number of champions. I said that it seemed fine with me, it was seldom that I had an ROM, and I sure was trying. Next John started to talk to me about finishing a dog. He felt that with the shows being so small, it was too easy to get a champion. He told me that if the show only have 30 dogs in it, how could it mean anything if you beat 29 others and got a major? I told him that they kept changing the point system, and it was as hard today to finish a dog as it always was. In each class there were three or four that could finish that day, and it didn't used to be that way. We actually were yelling and cursing. And then there was a pause, and John said: "Do you know what your problem is Evan?" I said, "No, what is it?" John said, "You just want everyone in dogs to have a good time." We were both silent on that comment, it must have been about a minute, and then together, we both started to laugh. I hope John is laughing now, right now I am not. But, it was my honor to have had the time with him I did, and to listen to his ideas, arguments, and knowledge. He, with so many others will be deeply missed.
