If you are judging you apply, and get a license.  If you are handling you 
run, buy some good shoes, and charge a lot of money. If  you are entering your 
breedings, you study the past generations, read the  pedigrees, watch what has 
won in the ring for the past years. Then you look over  the Illustrated 
Standard, read the standard as set by the parent club of your  breed, and then 
you 
look at what the dam you plan to breed to has produced in  the past, and what 
the stud dog you have picked has produced.
 
Then, when you breed your two choices, you hope  for a little luck, and then 
enter the show ring with what you have  produced.  
 
 
That is how you get to the show ring.  You  can do that by breeding to the 
standard, and then you will win.  You can  not breed to the standard, and not 
win, but that would just be stupid. But, the  question was about the 
illustrated 
standard.  The illustrated  standard is a very small part of how you get to 
the show ring.
