While I have yet to reply individually to each of you who responded to me today and kept the inquiries up all day long, I want to thank you all very much for your advice and support. These are the friendships forged by not only love for the same breed, but genuine concern for the individuals and families when the ring is miles away and we sit frightened in the dark, reaching out for a hand to grab on to. Thankfully, Cheyenne was not harmed in any way -- she apparently bolted when the bowl crashed onto the kitchen floor. Still, I was uneasy, and decided to take her to the emergency room. There was a small amount of blood on her chin, not enough to cause concern by itself, but as I examined her mouth I found that she had a small area on her lip where a scab had been ripped from. I just didn't like the way it looked, and though she wasn't acting sick, she has definitely been a little cranky the past week. I had written that off to the fact that the neighbors Chihuahua bitches are in season and poor Cheyenne has been getting way too much unwanted attention from our intact male. The emergency room vet confirmed that she has a skin infection brewing in the area. She prescribed an antibiotic and a rinse that I need to dilute and wipe her mouth with two or more times daily. The vet asked me if I wanted to do labs on her or wait and see how the antibiotic worked before incurring the costs of lab work. Knowing that a small infection can turn into a big problem quickly, I did choose to have the blood work done for my own peace of mind. Thankfully, everything was well within the normal levels, and I was glad that I had chosen to have the extra tests done rather than worry over the next week while the antibiotic does it's job. The salad bowl accident was really a blessing, since we found the infection before she started to show any real symptoms of being ill or worse, having a small infection set into a major organ and really cause serious problems. Now I am definitely going to get some sleep. Thank you again for your e-mails, caring, and support.
