Joyce that was the original premise, however, leave out the part about
owner/handlers, because even though the dog we entered in the Amateur fut was
bred by us and owned by us, it couldn't be shown by us. Had Kathaleen Strong
not decided to come visit, I would have arrived at the show without a handler
and a good chance of not finding one, so I would have been unable to show. My
daughter helped with the hospitality on Thurs. had she decided to stay, she
couldn't have handled for us either because she lives in our household. So
again, this ends up being more about handlers and less about dogs, that is why
I state is should be called and Amateur Handling Class. I think we all know
what the essence of a professional handler is, however putting it into writing
is going to be a challenge. Steve is not a professional handler by trade, but
he is a professional handler because he has accepted money within the last
year, even though it has been nominal and certainly not the majority
of his income and he does not have a rate card. However, where do you draw
the line? You can't say "if you are the breeder and owner of the dog you can
handle it" because that embodies nearly all professional handlers, this is
where it gets tricky. If you go by percentage of income, prove it. Are you
going to ask for everyone to present their financials? I think if Steve handled
most wouldn't complain, but if Alex handled even though handling isn't his
primary source of income most consider him a pro. You get the picture. Christine

The orginal thought on Amateur Fut/Mat, so I thought, was that if you had more
then one star in a litter and could only afford to put one out of that litter
with a prof handler, then the rest of the potential stars in the litter were
not showcased. Therefore the Amateur Fut was designed, where the other
littermates could be showcased by owners or amateur handlers, at no cost except
for entry fee. This would give a chance for the other potential stars in the
litter to be shown and for people to see what X and Y produces. Added bonus it
lets the amateur and owner handlers to be in a venue where they are not
competing against professionals. I see this as a good thing but it needs some
tweaking as does anything that starts off new. For the above reasons I do feel
however, that you enter a dog in one or the other, Amateur or Futurity and not
both. As for well known people/breeders doubling, if they are the
breeders/owners I am not sure where the problem lies..

The premise of this event was to show case amateurs, it did in the handling
aspect, but not in the category of breeders. We still had well -know people
doubling outside the ring( which was early on stated as being a potential
problem) we still had well known breeders exhibiting. I agree, the spirit
of the event was fun, but we can't continue to call it an Amateur fut. not the
future handling talent of novice handlers. If there
isn't enough interest by newbie breeders to participate and to exhibit what
they hope will be their future stars, then perhaps we need to simply call
this event the "Amateur handler" class. Make the rules accordingly and be
done with it.I would also continue to let it be optional for clubs to
