When I called the vet later in the day they said they had found a large
(tennis ball size) internal bunch next to, not in, his rectal area. It had
to be
palpated through the rectum. It was not visible from the outside. The vet
discussed some possible prognosis and then aspirated the growth.

It sounds like it may be a perianal hernia. I had a male have this years
ago, same symptoms. Its operable, just make sure you have someone do it who has

experience with this sort of surgery. Its not your typical surgery and most
vets don't have experience with it, and many won't even try it. My vet didn't
know what he was doing and my dog had some major complications because of the
his negligence.
