the right way to set the screen resolution is to reconfigure the
XServer or edit the configuration file. (dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
or /etc/X11/xorg.conf in new version)

Try installing the latest kernel with the command

apt-get install linux-image-2.6.21-2-XXX (replace XXX with the 486 or
686 based on the value you get with the command uname -r)

Did you got this problem in IT@School GNU/Linux 3.0?  In older version
there is some problem which is not yet identified.
