I think for non-profits it's less than $3. The page I read is 2.2% + 30
cents which, for a $25 membership is 85 cents.
I agree that the main purpose / benefit would be for membership dues. Less
hassle with checks/cash, trips to the bank etc. Of course, someone does
have to deal with the paypal stuff, tracking things online, etc.
I agree that's also totally reasonable to pass the cost on to the member.

Not that I can think of. Could we also use this for dues payments? San
Diego Astronomy Association does this and passes the charge to the member.
The members and new members are happy to pay the $3 so they can use a
credit card.
